Sports news is the branch of journalism that focuses on the coverage of sporting events and the activities of sports players, coaches, managers and administrators. It can also include news about the business side of the sports industry, such as team and player finances.
The field of Sports news has long attracted some of the finest journalistic talent. In Britain, for example, the Daily Mirror’s Peter Wilson, Hugh McIlvanney (first at The Observer then at the Sunday Times) and soccer writer Brian Glanville are among those whose work has been recognized with awards such as the Sports Writer of the Year award. In France, L’Auto – the original predecessor of L’Equipe – established a tradition that still exists today in which the leader of the Tour de France wears a jersey displaying the color of the newspaper that sponsored him (a similar practice existed in Italy with the Giro d’Italia).
As sport has become increasingly big business, so it has attracted the attention of investigative journalists. Tom Bower’s 2003 book Broken Dreams, for instance, uncovered the corruption that had tainted British football; a decade earlier, Andrew Jennings and Vyv Simson had exposed doping, fixed races and bribery in international athletics. Such exposes often require an outsider whose views will not be compromised by the day-to-day dealings with athletes and officials required of “beat” reporters.
